Data Scientist / Data Analyst / Environmental Scientist

Job Type: Full-time, Fixed-term Contract (Right to work in the UK required).
Contract Duration: 12 months (Opportunity for extension or permanent position).
Location: Hybrid role 3 days a week in the office (Birmingham/Wolverhampton); Fully remote considered for candidates with relevant experience.
Start Date: Expected in Spring 2025, following interview and skills/coding evaluation.

Position Overview:
We are looking to expand our environmental monitoring data collation and insights team and are seeking a dedicated, enthusiastic, and highly analytical scientist to join our environmental quality data and product team. In this role, you’ll work on a variety of exciting and challenging projects, providing ample opportunities to grow your skills. Key Responsibilities:
• Collect, clean, and preprocess large volumes of structured and unstructured data from diverse sources.
• Design, develop, and maintain efficient and scalable databases to support data analysis and decision-making.
• Design, implement, and optimize data pipelines to ingest, process, analyse, and visualize environmental datasets.
• Leverage statistical analysis, machine learning, and traditional modelling techniques to derive insights from data.
• Contribute to data science-based solutions to environmental problems of varying complexity.
• Build interactive data visualizations and dashboards, primarily using R-Shiny, to communicate key insights and findings to a wide range of stakeholders.
• Optimize data processing and dashboard performance for efficiency and scalability.
• Lead the entire process from concept to the creation of practical, data-driven solutions.
• Continuously explore emerging trends in data science, machine learning, and related technologies to enhance methodologies and improve processes.

Essential knowledge, skills and requirements:
• Ideally, over 1 year of commercial experience (however, exceptional graduates will also be considered).
• A degree in a relevant field with a strong focus on numerical analysis or programming (e.g., Data Science, Computer Science, Meteorology, Environmental Science, Hydrology, Engineering) or equivalent experience.
• Proven experience in a relevant role, applying data science or analytical skills to real-world problems.
• Proficient in programming languages R and Python, with experience of R-Shiny dashboards.
• Hands-on experience in designing, building, and managing databases, specifically with SQLite and PostgreSQL.
• Skilled in web scraping, including the development and maintenance of web scrapers to gather data.
• Practical, pragmatic, results-driven problem-solving approach with the ability to adapt to changing requirements.
• Strong mathematical, statistical, and analytical skills with a keen eye for accuracy and attention to detail.
• Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and manage tasks efficiently.

Desirable knowledge, skills and requirements:
• Experience in processing and managing environmental data, particularly environmental quality and hydrological datasets.
• Knowledge of machine learning techniques and their application in data analysis.
• Experience with version control systems like Git for managing code and collaboration in a team setting.
• Familiarity with cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) for data storage, processing, and model deployment.
• Experience managing subcontractors and collaborating with external partners.
• Familiarity with spatial data analysis and related software (e.g., R libraries such as mapviewer, ArcGIS, QGIS).
• Practical experience in deploying R-Shiny dashboards in a commercial or production environment.
• Experience implementing generative AI techniques for automating report generation and text writing.

Pay: £30,000.00-£60,000.00 per year (depending on experience)
